Your Name is widely considered the most popular among non-franchise anime movies. It was the highest-grossing anime movie of all time before being overtaken by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train and spirited away. The film grossed over ¥41.44 billion (US$380.15 million) worldwide, making it the highest-grossing anime film of 2016, the third highest-grossing anime film, the fifth highest-grossing film in Japan, the tenth highest-grossing traditionally animated film, and the 19th highest-grossing non-English film of all time.
Its creator Makoto Shinkai is a great writer who has created a series of a masterpiece with an extraordinary storyline and emotional attachment. Some of which are popular movies like 5 centimeters per second, The Garden Of Words, The Children Who Chase Lost Voices, and the latest one being Weathering With You. But his most popular one is undoubtedly Kimi no Nawa, also known as Your Name.
If you are a huge fan of the movie and need a similar type of experience, then here is a short list of anime movies that you would like to watch:
1. WEATHERING WITH YOU
This movie is another piece of work by Makoto Shinkai. It has a rollercoaster of emotions going from the beginning to the end. This anime is based on the 21st-century love story of two bound by fate to be separated. Ill try to not give away any spoilers but heres a little insight into what the story is.
Tokyo is currently experiencing rain showers that seem to disrupt the usual pace of everyone living there to no end. Amidst this seemingly eternal downpour arrives the runaway high school student Hodaka Morishima, who struggles to financially support himself-ending up with a job at a small-time publisher. At the same time, the orphaned Hina Amano also strives to find work to sustain herself and her younger brother.
Both fates intertwine when Hodaka attempts to rescue Hina from shady men, deciding to run away together. Subsequently, Hodaka discovers that Hina has a strange yet astounding power: the ability to call out the sun whenever she prays for it. With Tokyos unusual weather in mind, Hodaka sees the potential of this ability. He suggests that Hina should become a sunshine girl-someone who will clear the sky for people when they need it the most.
The story can be confusing to some audiences like Your Name but in my opinion, it was good. Some fans were disappointed with the movie but the previous one had set the bar too high. Still, it is better than average anime movies so you can enjoy it. Also, check out our top Anime quotes of all time.
2. HER BLUE SKY
This anime is somewhat not popular but still a good movie. It has the Your Name vibes around as there are supernatural elements mixed with love and life. Likewise, the main characters also have to make difficult choices in various situations throughout the story. Its focused on showing the difficulties of life and how pursuing ones dreams can be harsh. You can always relate to the teenage angst and anxiety felt in the movie. But here are some details before watching the whole movie.
Second-year high school student Aoi Aioi is an aspiring musician. Her older sister Akanes ex-boyfriend Shinnosuke Kanomura is a struggling guitarist. Aoi and Akanes parents passed away in an accident 13 years ago, and Akane gave up her ambition of going to Tokyo with Shinnosuke to take care of Aoi. Since then, Aoi has felt indebted to her older sister. One day, she is invited to perform at a music festival as a session musician by a famous enka singer named Dankichi. At the same time, Shinnosuke returns to Aoi and Akanes town after a long time away. Then, Shinno mysteriously appears-who is actually Shinnosuke from 13 years ago after traveling from the past to the present-and Aoi falls in love for the first time.
It is better for slice-of-life anime audiences who prefer a strong storyline and romance. It has a proper ending than other anime movies on the list. Due to its less popularity, there might not be much help on the internet.
3. FIVE CENTIMETRES PER SECOND
One of the best works of Makoto Shinkai, it is a fan favorite. It has a unique story progression and concept which we cannot find in other anime usually. The whole story plot is divided into three parts: each consisting of love interests and their obstacles. If youre expecting a happy ending, then this is not the anime for you.
Everything in this movie is well illustrated and many heartbreaking moments follow in the course of the whole movie. The main characters will grow apart further as every second of the movie passes by as the title suggests. It may seem like a weird movie to some viewers but there is a deep meaning in their relations and actions. The viewers will witness the unforgiving fate messing their life more as the days pass. It is a real tearjerker if you can feel the true meaning behind it like your name.
4. I WANT TO EAT YOUR PANCREAS
Despite less advertisement, it has an unexpectedly big fan base. It has a simple and definitive plot. To your surprise, the ending is determined from the start of the movie but it has some twists at the end. This anime has a weird name yet a strong sense of responsibility which completely throws off the audience.
In this movie, the female character is suffering from a terminal illness and she is hiding it from her friends to avoid them worrying about her. The male protagonist is a socially awkward nerd who later finds about her illness. Then they spend their days together until her death but they gain affection towards each other in the process. In Japanese tradition, it is believed that ones illness can be cured if one eats the organ/part which is damaged in their body. And the female main character has suffered a fatal illness in her pancreas which suggests the title of the movie.
I liked the movie and it is also one of my strong recommendations for new anime watchers too. Its not complicated and also my must-watch-before-you-die anime of all time. The characters made me so attached and it was worth every second. The start is a little slow but the ending is beautiful so better watch it out.
5. THE DISAPPEARANCE OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA
It has been one of the most liked anime movies in the anime community. This is the only anime series-based movie on this list. This movie has a mix of laughter, tears, anger, and intensity; perfect for the Your Name lovers. You will definitely like this but watch the anime series first as it may confuse you with some things from the series. Its fun to watch the teenagers goofing in their club room and doing weird things.
Each character except Koizumi in the club possesses some superpowers which are made possible by Haruhi. She can alter the world just by wanting the thing and she wanted a world where superpowers exist. Some see her as a threat to humanity so a time-traveler, alien, and wizard stay as club mates to keep an eye on her. In this movie, she goes missing and Koizumi is the last hope for all of humanity. It may not be enough so I suggest The melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya first and the movie after to get a better grip on it.
It is a pretty entertaining anime and it captivated the hearts of fans through its life lessons and well-executed script. Koizumi has to go through a lot of tough moments and fight with his own will and spirit. He has to fight his own weaknesses and overcome them on his own. I was impressed most by the portrayal of the characters struggles by the writer.
6. HOTARUBI NO MORI E
This anime is also a popular film like your name. Also known as Into the Forest of Fireflies Light, it gained massive popularity with its tragic romance story. It is relatively shorter than other movies, lasting for only forty-five minutes. It is heart-wrenching to see them fall apart after all the times they spent together.
Its a short movie so I wont give the details here but it has a supernatural element in it. I believe that you should check the movie out yourselves. It has a rather sad ending but it is a bit fulfilling to see how the female protagonist moves on and cherishes her memories with him. So it is not that depressing type of ending that most audiences generally assume.
7. MILLENNIUM ACTRESS
Like Hotarubi no Mori e we can see tragedy strike again in this movie. This movie is also underrated in my opinion and it needs to be watched by much more people. It can be weird for the first ten minutes but it will get better after that. It lays the perfect foundation for the story of the main character like your name.
The main character searches for her long-lost love whom she met for a brief moment. She travels through different times and places to meet him to keep her promise. She starts off from being an actress to a faithful lover with an unwavering heart You will be shocked after the ending of the movie that I can tell for sure. I laughed, raged, and cried with the protagonist as her hope got slimmer and slimmer. She tried hard to keep her promise even to her last breath whilst there was no sign of her love coming back.
It was a great experience for me to watch such a movie. Im generally into romance anime but this surely won my heart. Its story progression was fun to watch and the ending was beautiful but you will be bad for the protagonist at the end. So better watch the movie that is all I can say.
So this marks the end of the list I made for the weebs looking for anime movies to watch. There is a ton of romance anime but I picked out the most suitable anime for you. So better enjoy, Peace!
